Political Relations

Both Qatar and the US have taken direct steps to build mutual confidence and to reinforce an enduring political friendship. Through a series of high-level consultations over the past quarter-century, the two nations have partnered on key initiatives that directly affect the Middle East.

As a result, Qatar’s diplomatic initiatives – affecting regional interests in Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, and elsewhere – have the express support of the US Government.

In addition to the meeting between HH the Amir and President Trump in May 2017, other significant events that have strengthened our political ties include:

  • Multiple visits to Qatar by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, most recently in July and October of 2017.

  • The first visit to the US by HH the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in 1997, followed by other official visits at various levels.

  • A number of US senior officials at various levels of the Department of State, Department of Treasury, and Department of Energy, along with members and staff of the US Congress, have also visited Qatar to participate in conferences and forums held in Doha and in the meetings of Qatari-US educational and cultural exchange programs.

Qatar and the US will continue to build on this firm foundation through ongoing visits and by freely exchanging ideas for further joint initiatives.
