Diplomats Join Local Youth for Soccer Tournament and Cultural Exchange
WASHINGTON, DC, Feb. 13, 2018 – The Embassy of the State of Qatar hosted hundreds of local students to celebrate Qatar’s National Sport Day in partnership with the award-winning youth development nonprofit DC SCORES.
Students gathered at Total Soccer Arena in Landover, MD., to participate in a soccer tournament and learn about Qatari culture through activities such as painting and arts and crafts.
Embassy diplomats taught students about life in Qatar and spoke about the importance of physical activity and wellness. Diplomats also shared Qatar’s love for sports and excitement about hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Embassy of Qatar has partnered with DC SCORES over the last three years to help promote healthy and active lifestyles in the greater Washington, DC area, forming valuable community connections and exposing students to different cultures.
“National Sport Day is a very important celebration in our country and we are pleased to share it with young students from across the Washington, DC-area. Every year, the students bring excitement for soccer and an interest in learning about the world around them,” said His Excellency Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad Al Thani, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the United States.
Qatar is one of only five countries that has a national public holiday dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle among its population. National Sport Day brings the government and private sector together to promote health, wellness, and overall physical fitness across the country. The extension of this year’s celebration in Washington, DC, sponsored by the Embassy, encourages not only physical fitness and well-being, but also encourages students to engage with new cultures and form new connections.
