Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs, meet with US Acting Secretary of Defense

HE Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs, met with Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan at the Pentagon, Qatar ministry of Defense announced.

The meeting tackled bilateral relations of mutual interest between the two countries and ways to enhance co-operation between the two countries in a number of areas including military and defense.  

During the meeting, they discussed and exchanged views on the latest developments in the region.

Qatar's ambassador to the United States, Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad al-Thani, and Colonel Nawaf Mubarak al-Thani, the Qatari military defense attaché to the United States attended also the meeting.

Acting Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Charles E. Summers Jr. provided the following readout about the meeting:

Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick M. Shanahan met with Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Dr. Khalid Al Attiyah at the Pentagon to reaffirm the strategic security partnership between the U.S. and Qatar.

The leaders discussed a broad range of defense and security issues, including Qatari support to the NATO mission in Afghanistan and improvements to Al Udeid Air Base.

Acting Secretary Shanahan thanked the Qatari delegation for their continued hospitality in hosting U.S. forces and affirmed our commitment to ongoing security cooperation for peace and stability in the region.

HE Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs, held talks also with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Gulf Affairs Timothy Lenderking. The officials discussed and exchanged views on common regional issues, Qatar ministry of Defense announced.

HE Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah, met as well with Ambassador James Jeffrey, US Special Envoy for Syrian Affairs. The latest developments in Syria were discussed in their meeting. Qatar's ambassador to the United States, Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad al-Thani, and Colonel Nawaf Mubarak al-Thani, the Qatari military defense attaché to the United States attended also the meeting.
